Boston Fans Buried Their Stanley Cup Sorrows in a Porn Avalanche

Boston Fans Buried Their Stanley Cup Sorrows in a Porn Avalanche

After the Boston Bruins lost the NHL championship to the Chicago Blackhawks Monday night, fans consoled themselves with porn, according to stats from PornHub. You might not have a Stanley Cup win, but you always have amateur adult films!

PornHub monitored traffic during the final game, from the hours of 8-11pm EST Monday night. Surprise, surprise, it was down from normal levels because bros were out watching the big game. Then at 11, traffic in Chicago stayed down because the whole town was celebrating. But in Boston? Not so much. Incoming PornHub traffic from Beantown skyrocketed by nearly a quarter. If you're not feeling up to rioting for your hockey team, well, at least there's always PorunHub. [CBS Sports via Digg]

Soft matter offers new ways to study how materials arrange

May 21, 2013 ? A fried breakfast food popular in Spain provided the inspiration for the development of doughnut-shaped droplets that may provide scientists with a new approach for studying fundamental issues in physics, mathematics and materials.

The doughnut-shaped droplets, a shape known as toroidal, are formed from two dissimilar liquids using a simple rotating stage and an injection needle. About a millimeter in overall size, the droplets are produced individually, their shapes maintained by a surrounding springy material made of polymers. Droplets in this toroidal shape made of a liquid crystal -- the same type of material used in laptop displays -- may have properties very different from those of spherical droplets made from the same material.

While researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology don't have a specific application for the doughnut-shaped droplets yet, they believe the novel structures offer opportunities to study many interesting problems, from looking at the properties of ordered materials within these confined spaces to studying how geometry affects how cells behave.

"Our experiments provide a fresh approach to the way that people have been looking at these kinds of problems, which is mainly theoretical. We are doing experiments with toroids whose geometry can be precisely controlled in the lab," said Alberto Fernandez-Nieves, an assistant professor in the Georgia Tech School of Physics. "This work opens up a new way to experimentally look at problems that nobody has been able to study before. The properties of toroidal surfaces are very different, from a general point of view, from those of spherical surfaces."

Development of these "stable nematic droplets with handles" was described May 20 in the early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and also involves researchers at the Lorentz Institute for Theoretical Physics at Leiden University in The Netherlands and at York University in the United Kingdom.

Droplets normally form spherical shapes to minimize the surface area required to contain a given volume of liquid. Though they appear to be simple, when an ordered material like a crystal or a liquid crystal lives on the surface of a sphere, it provides interesting challenges to mathematicians and theoretical physicists.

A physicist who focuses on soft condensed matter, Fernandez-Nieves had long been interested in the theoretical aspects of curved surfaces. Working with graduate research assistant Ekapop Pairam and postdoctoral fellow Jayalakshmi Vallamkondu, he wanted to extend the theoretical studies into the experimental world for a system of toroidal shapes.

But could doughnut-shaped droplets be made in the lab?

The partial answer came from churros Fernandez-Nieves ate as a child growing up in Spain. These "Spanish doughnuts" -- actually spirals -- are made by injecting dough into hot oil while the dough is spun and fried.

In the lab at a much smaller size scale, the researchers found they could use a similar process with two immiscible liquids such as glycerine or water and oil, a needle and a magnetically-controlled rotating stage. A droplet of glycerine is injected into the rotating stage containing the oil. In certain conditions, a jet forms at the needle, which closes up into a torus because of the imposed rotation.

"You can control the two relevant curvatures of the torus," explained Fernandez-Nieves. "You can control how large it is because you can move the needle with respect to the rotation axis. You can also infuse more volume to make the torus thicker."

If the stage is then turned off, however, the drop of glycerine quickly loses its doughnut shape as surface tension forces it to become a traditional spherical droplet. To maintain the toroidal shape, Fernandez-Nieves and his collaborators replace the surrounding oil with a springy polymeric material; the springy character of this material provides a force that can overcome surface tension forces.

"When you are making the toroid, the forces on the needle are large enough that the surrounding material behaves as a fluid," he explained. "Once you stop, the elasticity of the outside fluid overcomes surface tension and that freezes the structure in place."

The researchers have been using the doughnut shapes to study how liquid crystal materials, which are well known for their applications in laptop displays, organize inside the torus. These materials have degrees of order beyond those of simple liquids such as water. For these materials, the toroidal shape provides a new set of study opportunities from both theoretical and experimental perspectives.

"This changes how you think about a liquid inside a container," said Fernandez-Nieves. "The materials will still adopt the shape of the container, but its energy will be different depending on the shape. The materials feel distortions and will try to minimize them. In a given shape, the molecules in these materials will rearrange themselves to minimize these distortions."

Among the surprises is that the nematic droplets created with toroidal shapes become chiral, that is, they adopt a certain twisting direction and break their mirror symmetry.

"In our case, the materials we are using are not chiral under normal circumstances," he noted. "This was a surprise to us, and it has to do with how we are confining the molecules."

Beyond looking at the dynamics of creating the droplets and how ordered materials behave when the torus transforms into a sphere, Fernandez-Nieves and colleagues are also exploring potential biological applications, applying electrical fields to the droplets, and sharing the unique structures with scientists at other institutions.

"This is the first time that stable nematic droplets have been generated with handles, and we have exploited that to look at the nematic organization inside those spaces," said Fernandez-Nieves. "Our experiments open up a versatile new approach for generating handled droplets made of an ordered material that can self-assemble into interesting and unexpected structures when confined to these non-spherical spaces. Now that theoreticians realize we can generate and study these systems, there may be much more development in this area."

In addition to those already mentioned, the paper's authors included V. Koning, B.C. van Zuiden and V. Vitelli from Leiden University, M.A. Bates from the University of York in the United Kingdom, and P.W. Ellis from Georgia Tech.

The research described here has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation under CAREER award DMR-0847304. The findings and conclusions are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the National Science Foundation.

A 6,000-Mile Panorama Of The Earth Is Pretty Beast

In April NASA's Landsat Data Continuity Mission took a huge panorama. From 438 miles above the Earth, the satellite shot a 6,000-mile-long, 120-mile-wide strip of planet from Russia to South Africa. It is aptly named ?The Long Swath.? Oh and it's 19.06 gigapixels.

Art, Music & Dance Can Help Ease Anxiety, Depression in Cancer ...

By Traci Pedersen Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on May 18, 2013

Art, Music & Dance Help Ease Anxiety, Depression in Cancer Patients For patients with cancer, participating in art, music and dance therapy may help relieve depression and anxiety, according to new research.

?People with cancer very often feel like their body has been taken over by the cancer. They feel overwhelmed,? said Dr. Joke Bradt, a music therapist from Drexel University in Philadelphia.

?To be able to engage in a creative process? that stands in a very stark contrast to sort of passively submitting oneself to cancer treatments,? said Bradt.

Researchers analyzed 27 past studies of nearly 1,600 people who were randomly assigned to receive some form of creative arts therapy or not, during or after cancer treatment. Most of the patients had breast cancer or a type of blood cancer?such as leukemia and lymphoma.

Music, art and dance therapy programs varied in how often the sessions were held and over what time span. Over half of the programs did not involve counseling with trained therapists.

Overall, patients with cancer who were assigned to creative arts treatments reported less depression, anxiety and pain and a better quality of life during the programs than those who were put on a wait list or continued receiving typical care.

For example, in one 2010 study, listening to half an hour of familiar music dropped pain levels in half for 42 percent of hospitalized patients, while just eight percent of those in a comparison group experienced relief.

Those in creative arts therapy did not report being any less tired than patients assigned to a control group. And most of the other benefits discontinued once therapy ended, the researchers reported in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Researchers noted that the benefits tied to creative arts therapies were small, but similar to those of other complementary techniques such as yoga and acupuncture.

Lead author Timothy Puetz, Ph.D.,?from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., said researchers have believed music and art therapy may help cancer patients ?for a long time,? although rigorous studies have been lacking.

?People have really broadened their perspectives on what is health and have moved beyond just the physical,? said Puetz.

?More and more clinicians and certified creative arts therapists? they?re actually reaching out to each other now, and discussions are on the table to try to bring this type of therapy to cancer patients.?

Bradt said that, for some patients, working directly with an arts therapist may be most helpful, but it isn?t essential. For example, anyone looking to refocus away from the anxiety of a cancer diagnosis and treatment can join a choir or an art class.

?We all know that music or art or just aesthetic beauty in general makes us feel better,? she said. ?I do not want to underestimate the power of just the arts by themselves.?

Seamless and GrubHub are merging to form a giant food delivery service

Seamless and GrubHub, two of the biggest food delivery services in the US, have just announced they'll be merging into a combined company, with the name of the new operation to be decided at a later date. (SeamHub? Grubless?) Unlike some other transactions we cover around here, this does seem to be a merger in the truest sense of the word, with GrubHub founder Matt Maloney stepping up to the role of president, and Seamless CEO Jonathan Zabusky staying on as president. Though we don't yet know what the new service will be called, the companies are already saying it will serve 500 US cities, with around 20,000 restaurants taking orders. Also, as hinted in that press release below, the merger will give the new mega-company more financial flexibility when it comes to further growth opportunities. Next up: Delivery.com?

Picking right words within domain name - UK Business Forums

I'm in the process of starting a website, and ideally want the main product catagory in my domain name. So for this example i shall use 'mens wallets' to explain my question.

So, website selling mens wallets therfore want to have them two words in domain name. I know this is not essential but the way i want to go.

Doing the google keyword search results show monthly hits as follows -
Mens Wallets = 18000
Mens Wallet = 22000
(above figures are same as per my actual words for website)

As you can see its just the 'S' at the end being the difference. Which is the better version to use? i know google telling me 'Wallet' has more searches but surley it picks up both anyway?? I can get suitable domain names to suit both options so looking for more professional opinion.
Thanks

Mars rover Opportunity examines clay clues in rock

May 18, 2013 ? NASA's senior Mars rover, Opportunity, is driving to a new study area after a dramatic finish to 20 months on "Cape York" with examination of a rock intensely altered by water.

The fractured rock, called "Esperance," provides evidence about a wet ancient environment possibly favorable for life. The mission's principal investigator, Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., said, "Esperance was so important, we committed several weeks to getting this one measurement of it, even though we knew the clock was ticking."

The mission's engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., had set this week as a deadline for starting a drive toward "Solander Point," where the team plans to keep Opportunity working during its next Martian winter.

"What's so special about Esperance is that there was enough water not only for reactions that produced clay minerals, but also enough to flush out ions set loose by those reactions, so that Opportunity can clearly see the alteration," said Scott McLennan of the State University of New York, Stony Brook, a long-term planner for Opportunity's science team.

This rock's composition is unlike any other Opportunity has investigated during nine years on Mars -- higher in aluminum and silica, lower in calcium and iron.

The next destination, Solander Point, and the area Opportunity is leaving, Cape York, both are segments of the rim of Endeavour Crater, which spans 14 miles (22 kilometers) across. The planned driving route to Solander Point is about 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers). Cape York has been Opportunity's home since the rover arrived at the western edge of Endeavour in mid-2011 after a two-year trek from a smaller crater.

"Based on our current solar-array dust models, we intend to reach an area of 15 degrees northerly tilt before Opportunity's sixth Martian winter," said JPL's Scott Lever, mission manager. "Solander Point gives us that tilt and may allow us to move around quite a bit for winter science observations."

Northerly tilt increases output from the rover's solar panels during southern-hemisphere winter. Daily sunshine for Opportunity will reach winter minimum in February 2014. The rover needs to be on a favorable slope well before then.

The first drive away from Esperance covered 81.7 feet (24.9 meters) on May 14. Three days earlier, Opportunity finished exposing a patch of the rock's interior with the rock abrasion tool. The team used a camera and spectrometer on the robotic arm to examine Esperance.

The team identified Esperance while exploring a portion of Cape York where the Compact Reconnaissance Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter had detected a clay mineral. Clays typically form in wet environments that are not harshly acidic. For years, Opportunity had been finding evidence for ancient wet environments that were very acidic. The CRISM findings prompted the rover team to investigate the area where clay had been detected from orbit. There, they found an outcrop called "Whitewater Lake," containing a small amount of clay from alteration by exposure to water.

"There appears to have been extensive, but weak, alteration of Whitewater Lake, but intense alteration of Esperance along fractures that provided conduits for fluid flow," Squyres said. "Water that moved through fractures during this rock's history would have provided more favorable conditions for biology than any other wet environment recorded in rocks Opportunity has seen."

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project launched Opportunity to Mars on July 7, 2003, about a month after its twin rover, Spirit. Both were sent for three-month prime missions to study the history of wet environments on ancient Mars and continued working in extended missions. Spirit ceased operations in 2010.

Up to 60 injured after car drives into Va. parade

DAMASCUS, Va. (AP) ? About 50 to 60 people were injured Saturday when a driver described by witnesses as an elderly man drove his car into a group of hikers marching in a parade in a small Virginia mountain town.

It happened around 2:10 p.m. during the Hikers Parade at the Trail Days festival, an annual celebration of the Appalachian Trail in Damascus, near the Tennessee state line about a half-hour drive east of Bristol.

Washington County director of emergency management Pokey Harris said no fatalities had been reported.

The injuries ranged from critical to superficial, he said. Three of the victims were flown by helicopters to regional hospitals. Another 12 to 15 were taken by ambulance. The rest were treated at the scene.

At a news conference, Damascus Police Chief Bill Nunley didn't release the driver's name or age but said he was participating in the parade. Multiple witnesses described him as an elderly man.

Nunley said the man's 1997 Cadillac was one of the last vehicles in the parade and the driver might have suffered an unspecified medical problem when his car accelerated to about 25 mph and struck the crowd on a two-lane bridge along the town's main road. The driver was among those taken to hospitals.

"It is under investigation and charges may be placed," Nunley said.

There were ambulances in the parade ahead of the hikers and paramedics on board immediately responded to the crash.

Nunley cited the "quick action" by police, firefighters, paramedics and hikers to tend to the victims, including a Damascus volunteer firefighter who dove into the car to turn off the ignition. The firefighter, whose name wasn't released, suffered minor injuries.

Nunley said about 1,000 people participated in the parade. Nunley said the driver was a hiker, too ? someone who had traversed the Appalachian Trail in the past.

What caused the car to drive into the crowd wasn't immediately known. A thud could be heard, people yelled stop, and at some point, the car finally stopped.

Witnesses said the car had a handicapped parking sticker and it went more than 100 feet before coming to a stop.

"He was hitting hikers," said Vickie Harmon, a witness from Damascus. "I saw hikers just go everywhere."

Damascus resident Amanda Puckett, who was watching the parade with her children, ran to the car, where she and others lifted the car off those pinned underneath.

"Everybody just threw our hands up on the car and we just lifted the car up," she said.

Keith Neumann, a hiker from South Carolina, said he was part of the group that scrambled around the car. They pushed the car backward to free a woman trapped underneath and lifted it off the ground to make sure no one else was trapped. Another person jumped inside to put it in park.

"There's no single heroes. We're talking about a group effort of everybody jumping in," he said.

Mayor Jack McCrady encouraged people to attend the festival on Sunday, its final day.

"In 27 years of this, we've never had anything of this magnitude, and is it our job to make sure it doesn't happen again," he said.

McCrady said a donation fund was being set up to assist the injured, some of whom don't have medical insurance.

"We want to make sure they don't suffer any greater loss than they already have," he said.

Business Opportunities With 100% Commissions - Level One Network

Home Business - Four Home Based Business Opportunities To Choose From

?

A Home business is virtually everywhere you look online. And the promoters of each home based business opportunity sometimes claim that the opportunity they promote is the most desirable business opportunity to join. This often makes it difficult for newbie?s to make the right choice, the choice that best suit their situation.

?

This page takes a look at the four broad categories of a home business so you can identify the option that suit your circumstances and therefore make informed choice.

?

The four broad categories of a home based business are:

?

1. Opportunities that involve building an information rich web site from scratch and thereafter monetizing the resulting traffic

?

2. Opportunities that involve joining affiliate programs that offer unique affiliate links for promoting the affiliate product or service

?

3. Opportunities that involve joining a network marketing home based business opportunity that offer free distributor web site to members and

?

4. Opportunities that involve getting paid a fixed amount for completing a set of tasks online

?

Let?s take a closer look at each option above.

?

The first online business involves building your dream online business from scratch.

?

The perfect process requires you to do the following:

  • Identify your passion
  • Brainstorm topics that fall within your passion or interest using appropriate brainstorming software
  • Identify a financially fruitful niche that matches your passion or interest
  • Assemble low competition keywords that define your niche
  • Draw up a site blueprint
  • design your website
  • Write content for your web page using the low competition keywords brainstormed earlier
  • Promote your site massively online
  • Add income generating streams to your website
  • Cash your money month after month

?

If you conclude that the above process is tedious and time consuming, you're probably right.

?

But why?

It is because it is business... it's online business. And online business takes time, effort, and creativity just like offline does.

?

The second home business opportunity mentioned above is affiliate program marketing. With this type of online business, you join the affiliate program of your choice and promote the affiliate links you're given using a blend of web portal marketing techniques. Some affiliate marketing techniques will produce more results than others. So, you're require to track your sales promotion efforts or campaigns to determine what works and what doesn't for the specific affiliate program you promote. Then drop campaigns that don't work and do more of what works.

?

The third category of home based business opportunities are MLM home business ventures that offer members free distributor web presences to promote the MLM business opportunity. As with the affiliate program model, members of this type of MLM business opportunity promote their member web site website address and register new team members using the tools on the member site they were given.

?

The fourth online business opportunity involves finishing a set of tasks in expectation of being paid a pre-determined amount.

?

These kinds of home businesses include:

  • paid to write
  • paid to attend to clients (online customer service jobs)
  • ... and other such online job opportunities.

?

WARNING: verify that the internet job opportunity you're interested in is legitimate before you join!

?

Each of the home business opportunities described above have their pros and cons.

?

Option 1 above requires you to do a lot of work without immediate reward. With this type of online business, you're basically writing an online book or journal. And you don't get paid for writing a book until it's finished and it begins selling, right?

?

In simple words, this option is a long-term business where you build traffic or your own business partner base through content writing and marketing. This is a tedious but rewarding way to build a long-term business. With this type of home based business you own your traffic or customer base. And as you own your traffic, you own your business.

?

Option 2 is affiliate program marketing. This system involves selling a product or service by finding a market for it. Depending on where you advertise or promote the affiliate programs, you can begin to get rich (start earning commissions) right away.

?

Here's one thing to remember though:

Not everyone makes money from promoting affiliate program products despite spending a lot of money in advertising.

?

Why?

It is because affiliate program marketing success requires a set of skills. To accomplish ones goals, you need to learn the skill-set that guarantees achievement.

?

Option 3 is quite like option 2. You get paid commissions for promoting a network marketing opportunity.

?

However, unlike most affiliate programs that are free to join, virtually every network marketing home based business opportunity require members to join with a registration fee. Besides the registration fee, members must buy at least one pack of the MLM product they promote every month to stay active and qualify to earn commissions (at least in most programs). This means there's a maintenance cost for most MLM business opportunities.

?

Option 4 is the most direct form of online business. You get paid to complete a set of assignments. The problem with this is that it is like having a day job... when you stop working, you stop earning. ?Whereas with the other kinds of home business opportunities mentioned above, you can build your business to a point where what you earn far outweigh the efforts you put in. And you can put your business on auto pilot.

?

What home business option is right for you right now?

It depends on your current circumstances. In my candid opinion, the overall best option is one that allows you to make a long-term business and put your ventures on auto pilot down the road.

I'm talking passive income!

?

Bottom line.....It's your life. Choose how you want to live it.

Choose the opportunity that works for you.

Natural Health Source ? Natural Alternatives to HRT For Women

By Steven Hutchings

Nightsweats. Dryness. Pain and mood swings. They?re all symptoms of menopause that can make life miserable, affecting roughly 40% of women who?ve been through this milestone. Are there solutions? You can try hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Or you can try their natural alternatives.

HRT is a system of medical treatments designed to mimic the effects of estrogen and progesterone ? two hormones that level off during menopause. They both play a key role in health and sexual functioning during a woman?s reproductive years, which in part explains how HRT can alleviate some menopause symptoms and make the process more comfortable.

So what?s the catch? Well, a 2002 study found that HRT may increase risk of breast cancer and heart disease, among other ailments. Worse, a follow-up British study found that HRT heightened risk of endometrial (womb) and ovarian cancer. The findings were enough to make two prominent American health organizations warn against HRT for menopause symptoms. Sales have yet to recover.

Of course, you?re not without hope during this transitional stage of the female anatomy. Ever heard of black cohosh or red clover? We?ll discuss them shortly, and several other natural alternatives to HRT, that may soften the blow of those dreaded symptoms.

About HRT

Estrogen and progesterone both line the uterus and prepare it for possible implant of a fertilized egg. Estrogen also influences how the body uses calcium, which is important for bone health and healthy cholesterol levels in the blood.

As menopause approaches, the ovaries produce less of these female sex hormones, which can trigger hot flashes, decreased interest in sex, dryness and other symptoms of menopause, including risk of osteoporosis.

Hormone replacement therapy is designed to reduce menopause symptoms with either:

Estrogen Therapy ? In which the patient supplements with estrogen alone, with a daily pill, patch or cream.

Progesterone/Progestin-Estrogen Hormone Therapy ? Sometimes called ?combination therapy?, this option combines estrogen and a synthetic form of progesterone, called progestin. Combination therapy can cause monthly bleeding, in which case, estrogen and a lower dose of progesterone, taken continuously, may be appropriate.

Women who pursue HRT and still have their uterus should use the combination therapy treatment because estrogen without progesterone can increase risk of endometrial cancer.

Don?t Do HRT If?

You have active breast cancer or history of it. The same goes for women linked to endometrial cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, blood clots, history of stroke, liver disease or pregnancy.

Smokers should try to quit the habit before doing HRT as well.

Sales of HRT prescriptions plummeted in 2002 when researchers published their findings from the Women?s Health Initiative study, in which they found that women who did the estrogen/progestin treatment were more likely to experience heart attack, stroke, blood clots and breast cancer.

Two subsequent studies, including the Million Women Study, conducted by British researchers in 2006, confirmed these links and added two more cancer risks to this already concerning series of risks from HRT.

Some medical experts take issue with how researchers conducted the studies. They note, for example, that most of the study participants were caucasian, former smokers and slightly overweight. And in March 2013, South African researchers published a review of the three studies?in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care, in which they claimed the link to breast cancer is tenuous.

Women who pursue HRT and still have their uterus should use the combination therapy treatment because?estrogen without progesterone can increase risk of endometrial cancer.

Still, it?s a discerning link. We know that HRT can increase risk of endometrial cancer, blood clots and stroke in some women. Knowing that, it?s not a huge leap from there to conclude the link between HRT and breast cancer is more than noteworthy.

Having reviewed this information, speak with your doctor if you?re still interested in HRT. He knows your medical history and can best recommend your strategy from there. Even then, he?ll likely recommend a low dose and for the shortest time possible.

You?ve got another option too: treat menopause symptoms naturally, without HRT. A wise choice if you?re in this camp, and it starts with the foods that end up on your plate.

The Menopause Diet

Menopause is a biological milestone in a woman?s body. You might alleviate symptoms during and after this momentous occasion with dietary patterns including:

Up your calcium intake ? Calcium tends to trail off during menopause, which in part explains why women are at higher risk of osteoporosis. Aim to eat and/or drink four sources of calcium each day, whether that?s dairy, fish with bones, broccoli or legumes, among others. Women above 51 should aim for 1,200 grams of calcium each day.

Eat more iron ? Like calcium, iron levels fall during menopause, making it important to get at least three iron servings each day. Sources of iron include lean red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts and green leafy vegetables. Your daily target: 8 mg.

Fibre ? It?s hard to go wrong with fibre-rich foods like whole grain breads, cereal, pasta, (brown) rice, fresh fruits and vegetables. Try for 21 grams each day and you?re much less likely to experience digestion problems too.

Read the labels ? Check the labels of packaged foods to help you buy more nutritious foods for a healthy lifestyle.

Drink water ? Aim for eight glasses of water each day. This meets the needs of most adult women while factoring in variables like daily calories consumed, activity levels and climate.

Keep a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 20 and 24 ? This gets more difficult with age, but do try, because it will affect menopause symptoms. Reduce portion size if necessary, or cut back on high fat foods rather than skipping meals. Speak with your doctor or a dietician for more information.

Limit high fat foods ? As a general rule of thumb, fats should comprise 25%-35% of your diet, with saturated fats limited to 7% because they raise unhealthy cholesterol levels and increase risk of heart disease. Try to keep cholesterol to 300 mg daily while you?re at it, and severely limit (or abstain from) trans fats.

Watch the sugar and salt ? Excessive sodium can raise blood pressure. Smoked, salt-cured and charbroiled foods aren?t much better because they contain high levels of nitrates, which are linked to cancer.

Limit alcohol ? Keep alcohol consumption to one drink per day.

Black Cohosh: A Natural Alternative to HRT

The menopause diet is a good place to start and should at least reduce menopause symptoms. Now, do you want natural alternatives to HRT? Try black cohosh root.

You might?ve heard of this tall, flowering plant before. Native to eastern North America, native Americans have used black cohosh for at least 200 years to ease menstrual cramps and symptoms of menopause. Natural health enthusiasts have caught on too; it?s now approved by the German government as a natural menopause treatment, and sales are brisk in the United States.

Research shows a beneficial effect between black cohosh and menopause. Early German studies reveal that it improved both physical and psychological symptoms, including dryness, hot flashes, night sweats and anxiety. In one study, of 120 women, black cohosh was more effective at reducing night sweats and hot flashes than the antidepressant Prozac.

Studies are back and forth with black cohosh. Some have found little benefit, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) claims that many of the early studies were poorly designed and don?t explore use of black cohosh root beyond six months.

Nonetheless, the proof is there. Clinical studies show that black cohosh root can reduce menopause symptoms at least on a short-term basis. Even ACOG, the same organization that criticizes some of the earlier black cohosh studies, recognizes its value as a natural menopause treatment.

You can buy black cohosh root as capsules or tablets, liquid tinctures, extracts or dried root to make a tea. The recommended daily dose for black cohosh root is between 40-80 mg per day. Look for tablets standardized with 1 mg of 27-deoxyactein. Or alternatively, buy it in a natural libido pill for women like Provestra.

To make a black cohosh tea, put 20 g of the dried root in 34 oz of water. Boil the water, then let simmer for 20-30 minutes until the liquid is reduced by a third. Then strain, cover and store it in the refrigerator or a cool place. Drink black cohosh tea three times daily.

Red Clover, Probiotics and a Few Others

As well, red clover might be a good natural remedy for menopause symptoms, according to research published in the Journal of the British Menopause Society, in which researchers found this isoflavone reduced bone loss, improved cardiovascular health and may offer protection from breast and endometrial cancer.

Red clover might also reduce hot flashes in perimenopausal and menopausal women. In one eight week study, women who took a 40 mg red clover supplement each day reported a 58% lower incidence of hot flashes, with reduced severity of night sweats as well.

The red clover supplement, Promensil, is available over the counter and without a prescription.

In one eight week study, women who took a 40 mg red clover supplement each day reported a 58% lower incidence of hot flashes, with reduced severity of night sweats as well.

You can also try probiotics. The Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifido strains are the ?good? bacteria?that live in the intestines. They establish balance in the gut and kill dangerous microflora, but they also assist with metabolism and help the body use estrogen. Some experts believe they also reduce yeast infections. Get probiotics from food and supplements.

Finally, consider a book written by pharmacist Steven G. Ottariano, Medicinal Herbal Therapy: A Pharmacist?s Viewpoint, in which he discusses the many vitamins and minerals he believes can help women treat menopause symptoms. Among his favorites? Vitamin E, Dong Quai, Evening Primrose Oil and Ginseng.

Resources For Menopause

Of course, you?re not alone in this journey. Menopause symptoms ? those severe enough to make women consider HRT ? affect most women at some point during this time of immense change. This being the global village that it is, you might find the following internet resources can help you reduce symptoms, preferably without HRT, for smooth sailing to the next phase of your life:

WebMD ? WebMD has a little something for everyone. Their menopause section is particularly extensive.

Women?s Health Initiative ? The group that championed the first large-scale study of HRT and its health risks, the Women?s Health Initiative remains at the forefront of HRT research and safety. You can learn more about the study and the most recent developments on their website.

Prevention ? We can?t finish an article on natural alternatives to HRT for women without mention of the kings of natural health. Prevention magazine has a great section on menopause. Check out their article, 14 Natural Remedies for Hot Flashes.

Wait Until You Hear Who the Turkish Prime Minister Reportedly Invited to Join His Entourage During U.S. Visit

Turkish Prime Minister Invited Father of Radical Islamist Killed in Gaza Flotilla to Join His Entourage on US VisitErdogan-Obama-Getty

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an allegedly invited a special personal guest to accompany him on his visit to the U.S. this week.

According to Turkish media, the father of one of the radical Islamist activists killed in Israel's raid on the Mavi Marmara in 2010 (the Gaza flotilla) was included as an invited guest in the prime minister's delegation in the hopes he might be able to meet President Barack Obama.

Furkan Do?an, a 19-year-old with both Turkish and U.S. citizenship, joined the Gaza flotilla where he expressed his desire for "martyrdom." His father now wants the U.S. government to sue Israel over the raid in which the IDF says its forces were defending themselves from what appeared to them to be an organized attack launched by passengers armed with knives and metal bars as the commandos boarded the ship.

Today's Zaman reports:

Ahmet Do?an, who asked Erdo?an to deliver a letter to US President Barack Obama, joined Erdo?an's delegation upon a request by the Turkish prime minister.

Do?an said Erdo?an told him: "I can give this letter [to him], but it is better if you give the letter to him yourself. I will include you among the members of the official delegation." Do?an also said the prime minister told him he should meet with Obama if they can arrange an appointment with him. The victim's father said he described Furkan and wrote about his son's life in the letter.

It's unknown if the father's letter was delivered to Obama or if he actually met the President during the trip. That the radical activist's father was with the prime minister's entourage was not addressed during the joint Obama-Erdo?an press conference Thursday or at the White House or State Department briefings of the past few days.

Furkan Do?an, along with eight Turkish activists, was killed in a battle with Israeli commandos who boarded the ship to enforce the naval blockade on Gaza, instituted after Palestinian terrorists were caught smuggling heavy weapons to the territory by ship.

Flotilla organizers claimed they were on a humanitarian mission, but an Israeli think tank reported that seven of the nine passengers killed had professed a desire to die as "martyrs" before the boat set sail to Gaza. Radical Muslim terrorists and their supporters often glorify the idea of martyrdom for Allah, achieved via jihad.

The Jerusalem Post cited the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center which reported a month after the raid that eight of the nine passengers killed were members of the IHH, a Turkish group that calls itself humanitarian but which the Israeli government along with some U.S. and European lawmakers characterize as radical Islamist in nature. The State Department has not included the IHH on its list of terrorist groups.

According to the Israeli think tank report, a Turkish newspaper printed this quote from 19-year-old Furqan Dogan's diary, in which he said he wanted to be a martyr, providing strong evidence his intentions were not peaceful: "These are the last hours before I join the sweet experience of being a shahid (martyr). Is there anything more beautiful than this?"

On his visit to Israel in March, President Obama convinced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to issue an apology to Turkey for the killing of the flotilla activists and to offer financial compensation for those killed. In exchange, Turkey was supposed to promise to drop any legal suits against the Israeli servicemen involved.

Ever since the apology, Turkey has appeared to backtrack on the deal personally brokered by Obama. Earlier this week, lawyers for the Turks killed filed a complaint against Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. That venue is chosen when parties seek investigations of war crimes, genocide or crimes against humanity.

Officially, the suit was referred to the court by Comoros, a small African country in which the Mavi Marmara was registered. Michael Rubin of Commentary Magazine suggests Erdo?an wants "plausible deniability," that it's not the Turkish government filing the suit in defiance of Obama's request.

Rubin reveals that the law firm behind the ICC filing employs one principal who is "a long-time AKP party [Erdo?an's Justice and Development Party] activist and the other has been intimately involved in the IHH." Rubin writes:

Anyone who believes that Erdo?an seeks to bury that hatchet more than rub salt into the wounds of the last two years needs only to consider the special guest whom he has had join his delegation.[...]

It is actually quite amazing: Erdo?an has endorsed an Al Qaeda financier, embraced not only Hamas but the most militant faction within that terrorist organization, defended the Sudanese leader against charges of genocide, and has been the largest leak in multilateral efforts to sanction Iran. And yet, Obama will not only welcome him to the White House with the highest honors, but help fulfill the Turkish premier's blatant desire to use the White House as the backdrop to follow through on his pledge to bash Israel at every opportunity.

Erdo?an has already rejected a personal request from Secretary of State John Kerry to hold off on visiting the Gaza Strip. Positioned next to Obama, Erdo?an used the White House backdrop Thursday to announce the June timeframe for his trip to meet with Hamas leaders in Gaza, a group the U.S. defines as a terrorist organization.

At the press conference, Obama emphasized his strong relations with the Turkish leader. "This visit reflects the importance that the United States places on our relationship with our ally, Turkey, and I value so much the partnership that I've been able to develop with Prime Minister Erdogan," Obama said according to the White House transcript.

Just two days after Turkish citizens got the International Criminal Court to investigate a possible case against Israel, Obama took a moment to compliment Erdo?an for the steps he's taken to fulfill the arrangement Obama brokered between Israel and Turkey.

"Given our shared interest in peace, I want to note the Prime Minister's efforts to normalize relations with Israel," Obama said.

White? House Press Secretary Jay Carney said at his daily news briefing Tuesday, "Turkey is one of our strongest partners."

Besides meeting Obama, Erdo?an placed a foundation stone at a new Turkish-American cultural center in Maryland.

According to Hurriyet Daily News, Erdo?an said the center reflects the "alliance of civilizations."

"In a period marked by Islamophobia, this center will express the brotherhood showing how wrong [Islamophobia] is," he said.

As fireworks crackle, Beckham plays last home game

PARIS (AP) ? Never a stranger to the big stage, David Beckham was finally overwhelmed and reduced to tears as he went out in a burst of fireworks and cheers Saturday in his final home game for Paris Saint-Germain before retirement.

Fans chanted his name before the game, and they chanted some more when he was finished. There was an outpouring of hugs, cheers, song and congratulations ? from teammates, opponents and even former president Nicolas Sarkozy.

There also was some soccer to be played. And Beckham, appointed captain for the game, was involved in two of his team's goals in a 3-1 victory over Brest.

He drew a roaring standing ovation and wiped away tears when he left in the 81st minute. As the match drew to a close, Beckham appeared to tire, putting his hands on his thighs as he leaned forward.

"I want to say thank you to everybody in Paris. To my teammates, to the staff, to the fans," Beckham told the fans after the game. "It's been very special to finish my career here. It could not have been any more special."

One after another, the players then walked out onto a makeshift podium in the middle of the field and thanked the crowd after the game had ended.

When it was Beckham's turn to climb onto the podium, the Beatles song 'Hello, Goodbye' rang out as the stadium's big screen beamed pictures of Beckham's short PSG career and flashed another message of thanks.

Draped in the English flag, Beckham sprinted onto the stage.

"Merci, Paris," he said. "I'm very sad to be leaving, but thank you."

When Beckham had gone off, the crowd, which included Sarkozy, rose as one and players trotted over to give him a hug. The players from Brest also understood the moment. Charlison Benschop, who had scored Brest's consolation goal a minute earlier, walked over to shake his hand.

With chants of "Dav-eed Beckham, Dav-eed Beckham" echoing, Beckham looked to be on the verge of tears. He applauded the crowd and blew a kiss to his family in the stands. There was time for one more hug ? this one a bit longer from coach Carlo Ancelotti ? before he sat on the bench, maybe for the last time.

The former England captain announced Thursday he is retiring at the end of the season.

"I just feel that it's the right time. I feel that I've achieved everything that I could in my career. I wanted to go out as a champion," Beckham said. "I've finished my career in a team that has treated me like I've been here for 10 years.

Beckham has yet to say if he will play in PSG's last game, at Lorient on May 26.

"It's a historic moment," the stadium announcer intoned as Beckham was substituted. Not that the crowd of 44,983 needed a reminder.

As Beckham walked off slowly, applauding the fans, his hair uncharacteristically bedraggled, his mother, Sandra, wiped away a tear in the stands.

His replacement, Ezequiel Lavezzi, gave Beckham a big hug and then ruffled the fashion maven's hair. Beckham immediately swept it back into place.

After the final whistle, teammates hoisted Beckham off the ground and repeatedly tossed him in the air, putting a smile back on his face.

The celebrations kicked in as the lights were turned off, light sticks were held up and the crowd broke into song. The fireworks then flew into the night sky, accompanied by an 'Ole!' as each one went off.

"After 22 years of playing football I'm going to take a few months to enjoy time with my family," Beckham said, before adding that he still wants to stay involved with PSG. "It's been a very special place for me."

Before the game, the 38-year-old Englishman was given a rousing reception at Parc des Princes. Spectators broke into chants of "Merci, David" when his name was read over the stadium speaker.

PSG's players walked onto the field to a thunderous reception, with Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" reverberating. PSG right back Christophe Jallet dyed his hair in the blue, white and red of the French flag while the players all wore next season's team jerseys.

The game brought a stronger security presence, with about 150 riot police forming a ring inside the stadium in the second half. The show of force followed Monday night's riots at Trocadero plaza, where a celebration to mark the French title turned violent.

This was Beckham's 14th game and fifth start since joining PSG in a surprise move on the last day of the transfer window. He was appointed captain before the game.

PSG clinched the league title last weekend, making Beckham the first English player to win the championship in four countries after title success with Manchester United, Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Beckham was involved in the opening goal in the seventh minute. His free kick found Clement Chantome, whose pass released Zlatan Ibrahimovic as he broke into the penalty area down the right side. Ibrahimovic struck the ball into the opposite corner.

Ibrahimovic almost scored a minute later when Beckham's superb long pass sent him through, but the imposing Swede hesitated between heading the ball over goalkeeper Alexis Thebaux or taking it past him. Theabaux snatched the ball from him.

Beckham set up the second goal in the 32nd with a corner kick from the left. Blaise Matuidi's poorly hit ball bounced into the ground and looped over Thebaux's outstretched arm. Ibrahimovic blasted in a free kick from 30 yards into the top left corner for the third goal, setting a personal record with his 29th league goal of the season.

Early in the second half, Beckham almost set up striker Kevin Gameiro with a curling cross from the right that the striker headed wide.

It would not be long before Beckham was gone, but the noise and the celebration and the fireworks still had a ways to go.

Afghan parliament fails to pass divisive women's law

By Miriam Arghandiwal and Ibrahimi Aziz

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan's parliament failed to pass a law on Saturday banning violence against women, a severe blow to progress made in women's rights in the conservative Muslim country since the Islamist Taliban was toppled over a decade ago.

President Hamid Karzai approved the law by decree in 2009 and parliament's endorsement was required. But a rift between conservative and more secular members of the assembly resulted in debate being deferred to a later date.

Religious members objected to at least eight articles in the legislation, including keeping the legal age for women to marry at 16, the existence of shelters for domestic abuse victims and the halving of the number of wives permitted to two.

"Today, the parliamentarians who oppose women's development, women's rights and the success of women...made their voices loud and clear," Fawzia Koofi, head of parliament's women's commission, told Reuters.

Women have won back the hard-fought right to education and work since the Taliban was toppled 12 years ago, but there are fears these freedoms could shrink once NATO-led forces leave Afghanistan by the end of next year.

Increasing insecurity is deterring some women from seeking work outside the home, and rights workers accuse the government of doing too little to protect women - allegations rejected by Karzai's administration.

"2014 is coming, change is coming, and the future of women in this country is uncertain. A new president will come and if he doesn't take women's rights seriously he can change the decree," Koofi said of the Elimination of Violence Against Women Law, which goes by the acronym EVAL.

The election for a new president is expected to be held in April 2014. The constitution bars Karzai from running again.

After almost two hours of clashes between Koofi and the more religious members of the 244-member parliament, speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said the assembly would consider the law again at a later date, but declined to say when.

Some members sought amendments, such as longer prison terms for crimes committed against women, such as beating and rape.

Many lawmakers, most of them male, cited violations of Islamic, or Sharia law.

"It is wrong that a woman and man cannot marry off their child until she is 16," said Obaidullah Barekzai, a member from southeast Uruzgan province, where female literacy rates are among the lowest in the country.

An Afghan man must be at least 18 years old to marry.

Barekzai argued against all age limits for women, citing historical figure Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq, a close companion of the Prophet Mohammad, who married off his daughter at age seven.

At least eight other lawmakers, mostly from the Ulema Council, a government-appointed body of clerics, joined him in decrying the EVAL as un-Islamic.

Abdul Sattar Khawasi, member for Kapisa province, called women's shelters "morally corrupt". Justice Minister Habibullah Ghaleb last year dismissed them as houses of "prostitution and immorality", provoking fierce condemnation from women's groups.

Check Out These Great Tips For Successful Internet Marketing

Check Out These Great Tips For Successful Internet Marketing

A lot of people fail to realize exactly what Online marketing is, and thus they end up doing things incorrectly and ultimately missing out on traffic and customers. It can be difficult for novices to start with Internet promotion, but useful advice is out there to help you get started and succeed.

It is vital to have a client mailing list. You can offer customers the option to provide their information, or you can make it mandatory for purchases. Later, you can incorporate this information to market to your customers, as well as send them promotional materials or inquire about customer feedback.

Make sure that your site has something unique about it. That will be the largest driver of your site traffic, as people are looking especially for your product. The customer will look at other things you have to offer, this will make your site legitimate and give you a higher rank.

TIP! You must take advantage of every software and technology advancement in order to be successful in Internet marketing. If your company happens to fall behind the technology curb, the competition could leave you in the dust.

Consider creating a section of your website where people can view all of your products. Keep in mind that there?s nothing wrong with variety, just avoid allowing your site to become cluttered.

You possess the skills needed to be successful in website marketing. Advanced software programs are not needed to be profitable. By working hard and thinking critically about the decisions you make, you can be successful.

Give your customers what they want. Just providing a one page website that gives your hours and address is not going to attract customers. Add interesting, relevant content like reviews and instructional articles that demonstrate your expertize and legitimacy in the eyes of prospective customers.

TIP! Make sure that you leave yourself open to receiving feedback and suggestions. This is very important to your business, as your perception of your prices and your site?s appearance might differ from the customer?s opinion.

Whenever possible, avoid using AJAX and Flash on your website. It might be attractive on your site, but the search engine is not going to rank you this way. Flash is unnecessary for SEO purposes, and a successful Internet site can engage customers without it.

Video marketing is an excellent way to promote your products. Adding a video to your website or blog is the best way to attract and hold a customer?s interest in your product. A unique picture with an interesting title can help grab a person?s attention and help make a sale.

Make sure you don?t overspend on advertising. There is no point in spending money on advertising techniques that will not work. The wise investor knows what he is paying for, and what is being paid for is worth the money. This is one thing that makes banners a strong marketing investment.

TIP! A frequently-asked questions page (FAQ) makes an excellent model for your Internet marketing content. For all questions or issues on the site, you should have a good response that helps to alleviate any concerns the customer may have.

If you employ a good enough plan for internet promotion, you should already have decided what products are going to make you the most money. A good strategy is to use your best sellers to drive sales of complimentary and add-on products. Point customers towards accessories and other items that go with your best sellers. This is a great way to cross-advertise and draw attention to newer or less popular products.

Monitor your results with visitor counters and other tools. Test ads, graphics, links and your checkout system on a regular basis. If there are problems with the site and the people cannot to where they want to go in a quick manner, there is a good chance you will lose that customer.

Your customers will appreciate any free service, tool or product that you can offer to them, free of charge. Visitors who come for the freebie might check out the rest of your site if you get their attention. A good incentive for a finance web site is a free calculator for tax returns.

TIP! If you really want to increase the traffic to your site, make sure that you?re advertising your site on other popular websites. This type of advertising will help more people become aware of your site and help your business grow.

Alter the links in your emails if you regularly use this method to communicate with your customers. After time, links that are always in the same position in your emails will be ignored. Keep the subject line of your emails interesting so your customers will continue to read them.

Try to make your ads look unique, instead of traditional and common banner ads. People will be convinced to click on your banner ad when you make your banner ads more exciting.

TIP! Utilizing email for marketing your business is a great idea. Grab your customers? interest by creating newsletters that inform and intrigue them.

As one aspect of your strategy for internet promotion, you need to include a refund guarantee. Your customers will feel safer and you will be more reputable. Trust is incredibly important with online businesses. The more trust a customer has in your product, the more likely they are to buy it. A guarantee goes a long way.

The best part of a solid marketing strategy is having solid content. Frequently assess your content and add new content to ensure that you are giving your customers what they are looking for. You may also want other people to look over the content. A fresh outlook can provide useful insight and catch errors that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Lastly, make sure you check the grammar and spelling of your content in order to assure there are no errors.

After reading the above article, begin incorporating what you have learned into your Internet promotion campaign. You need to remember to take things slowly and steadily. There aren?t very many tactics out there that will generate traffic instantly. As long as you?re using accurate information, you should have no trouble creating a sound approach.

TIP! Give your customers what they want. Customers want more information that includes business hours, business address and other relevant information.

Hands-on with BBM Channels: BlackBerry's trojan horse social platform

Handson with BBM Channels BlackBerry's trojan horse social platform

"It's more like Tumblr." That's how one BlackBerry rep described BBM Channels to us, the company's new social networking service announced this past week at BlackBerry Live in Orlando. While Channels, alone, may initially seem like nothing new -- it's an iteration of a social communication model we've seem countless times before -- the service actually speaks more to BlackBerry's forward-facing strategy for BBM as a device-agnostic mobile solution. And, certainly, with the BBM messaging service heading to Android and iOS later this summer, BlackBerry only stands to gain from making its platform more robust, more engaging and more attractive to the big name brands, personalities and publications that draw followers.

WWE donates $1.2 million to SLI for Boston University CTE Treatment Program

The Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (BU CSTE) announced the launch of a new research program aimed at developing a treatment for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The study will be funded across a three-year period by a $1.2 million gift from WWE to the non-profit Sports Legacy Institute (SLI), a founding partner of the BU CSTE.

Currently, CTE can only be diagnosed postmortem. The BU CSTE is leading the way in learning how to diagnose CTE in living people, a critical step in launching clinical trials in humans. The NIH-funded DETECT study, which stands for Diagnosing and Evaluating Traumatic Encephalopathy using Clinical Tests, led by BU CSTE investigator Robert Stern, Ph.D, professor of neurology and neurosurgery, is studying 100 former NFL players using a battery of tests to identify biomarkers for the disease.?

The WWE gift will initially fund a new investigation to screen potential CTE treatments using a preclinical model. If a viable treatment is identified, and the biomarker study is successful, it is hoped that it will open the door to human studies

This program will be led by Ann McKee, M.D., professor at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), director of the Neuropathology Service for VA New England Healthcare System and co-director of the BU CSTE, and Lee Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D, a BU CSTE investigator and associate professor at Boston University's School of Medicine and College of Engineering. In addition, McKee is leading a biomarker study funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs aimed at identifying CTE in military veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

CTE has been diagnosed in patients exposed to repeated brain trauma, including athletes who participate in contact sports, as well as military veterans and victims of abuse.

As part of its comprehensive Talent Wellness Program, WWE has been a leader in concussion prevention, education and management, with mandatory ImPACT? testing for all talent. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. In 2008, WWE was the first major sports-entertainment organization to include ImPACT testing as part of its Talent Wellness Program, where every one of its talent undergoes baseline neurocognitive testing. In addition, WWE consistently updates its safety policies as new research becomes available. WWE's Talent Wellness Program, which has been in place since 2006, also includes cardiovascular testing, medical and wellness staffing, annual physicals, drug testing and health care referrals.

"WWE is proud to help advance this critical research to help anyone at risk of suffering CTE," EVP Talent and Live Events for WWE Paul Levesque said. "WWE has been, and will continue to be, very proactive on taking measures to ensure the health and wellness of our talent."

"We appreciate the generosity of WWE," Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Sports Legacy Institute Christopher Nowinski said. "I enjoyed my time at WWE, and I am excited to reunite with the organization on this important cause that will benefit a lot of people we both care about."

SLI was founded in 2007 by Robert Cantu, M.D., and Nowinski, a former WWE Superstar, who was forced to retire in 2003 due to the effects of a lifetime of brain trauma sustained in football, soccer and WWE. Both serve as co-directors of the BU CSTE.

CTE is a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated brain trauma, including concussions and multiple subconcussive exposures such as those in contact sports and military combat, and appears to be slowly progressive in most individuals. In early stages, CTE is characterized by the presence of abnormal deposits of a protein called tau in the form of neurofibrillary tangles, glial tangles and neuropil threads throughout the brain. These tau lesions eventually lead to brain cell death. The vast majority of individuals pathologically diagnosed with CTE showed clinical symptoms involving cognitive, behavioral or mood impairments which worsened over time.?

"We've come a long way in five years; this funding will further accelerate the pace of our research and hasten the development of methods to detect CTE during life as well as identify treatments to slow or stop its progression," McKee said.

More than 600 living athletes have committed to donate their brain to the CSTE after death, including dozens of current and former WWE Superstars.
