Knicks rout Celtics 108-89 for eighth straight win

NEW YORK (AP) ? Closing in on one goal of ending Boston's division title reign, the New York Knicks added another.

While they were finishing off their second victory over the Celtics this week, injured forward Rasheed Wallace drew a large "50" on the board in their locker room, challenging them to strive for a 50-win season.

They're on pace to get that, too, in what's shaping up as their best season in two decades.

Carmelo Anthony had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and the Knicks extended their winning streak to eight games and moved closer to ending Boston's hold on the Atlantic Division title with a 108-89 victory Sunday night.

Coach Mike Woodson has talked about winning the division title since taking over last March, and Wallace has given the Knicks (46-26) another target.

"It's very doable for us and we have something to look forward to," Anthony said. "Fifty wins is always a great thing in this league to accomplish, winning a division is always a great thing to accomplish, a great accomplishment in this league. So them two things are definitely doable, we've just got to keep it moving, keep it going."

The Knicks won the season series for the first time since 2003-04, when they also went 3-1 against Boston. New York climbed back into a tie with Indiana in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, which would currently mean a playoff meeting with the Celtics.

Chris Copeland added 22 points and Raymond Felton had 18 for the Knicks, who last won eight in a row from Nov. 28-Dec. 12, 2010. They will try to extend the streak Tuesday at NBA-leading Miami.

"I think we're just clicking at the right time," swingman Iman Shumpert said. "Going in the playoffs, everybody's got a different focus. Guys got a little more pep in their step and everybody's locked in."

J.R. Smith, who had 30 points off the bench in his previous three games, finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Jeff Green scored 27 points, and Paul Pierce had 24 points and 15 rebounds as the Celtics had a two-game winning streak snapped.

"We just didn't close out to their shooters," Pierce said. "We pretty much gave them everything they wanted. We opened up their shooters, we opened up their drives (and) we fouled them too much. I don't even know how to explain it. They just beat us to the punch."

Pierce turned his ankle in the first quarter and could sit out the Celtics' game at Minnesota on Monday.

New York opened a 4 1/2 -game lead over Brooklyn atop the Atlantic and dropped the Celtics to 8? games back and the brink of elimination in the division race. Boston has won all five division titles since acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in the summer of 2007.

The Knicks, who won by 15 in Boston on Tuesday, haven't won a division title since the 1993-94 season, but a 12-6 March ? their most wins in that month since going 14-0 in that last division championship season ? has them on track.

"We all knew it was going to be a tough month and we're playing like we're trying to get something accomplished and that's winning our division and trying to secure that second spot," Woodson said.

The Knicks played their 10th straight game without Tyson Chandler, who has a bulging disk in his neck and hopes to return Tuesday. They flourished using a variety of small lineups, taking advantage of a Celtics team that has no inside presence, either, with Garnett continuing to rest a sore left ankle.

They believe a playoff meeting would be different with Garnett back. Boston swept New York in the first round in 2011.

"I feel like when we're healthy we can compete with anybody," Green said. "We can't get down on ourselves thinking that just because they beat us the last couple of times, that if we play them again that we have no chance. We have a chance on it, whoever we match up against."

Smith had averaged 26.4 points during the winning streak but shot just 4 of 12 Sunday. Still, New York controlled the game from early in the second quarter in the opener of a five-game stretch against likely playoff teams.

The Knicks shot 52 percent in the first quarter, got 12 points from Anthony and led 28-23. They opened it up with eight straight points early in the second to take a 42-32 lead on Steve Novak's 3-pointer. The Celtics trimmed the deficit to single digits just once in the half, which ended spectacularly when Felton threw in a buzzer-beater from just beyond half court to make it 65-48.

Notes: Knicks F Kenyon Martin sat out the latter part of the first half with a strained left abdominal muscle but returned to start the second. He threw up an airball on a third-quarter free throw but made the second, and sat out the fourth with the Knicks comfortably ahead. He insisted he could have returned. ... The Knicks also won eight in a row in the 1994-95 season. The last time they had a longer streak was a 15-game run late in the '93-94 season.

Business, labor reach immigration deal on guest workers. Will it stand?

The US Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO have reached a deal on guest workers as a part of comprehensive immigration reform. That was a major issue, but more remain including border security and a pathway to citizenship.

A major speed bump on the path to comprehensive immigration reform appears to have been removed. That?s the issue of guest workers ? low skilled immigrants who come to the United State under a temporary visa program.

Over the weekend, senior business and labor representatives came to an agreement on how many such workers could enter the US each year, what jobs they could hold, and what the pay scale would be.

The agreement was reached in a phone call late Friday night with AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, US Chamber of Commerce head Tom Donohue, and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) of New York, who's been mediating the dispute, reports CBS News.

By Sunday morning, senior lawmakers of both parties were confirming that a deal had been reached, and that this was an important step toward reform ? including how to address the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the US today.

"I think we've got a deal,? Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina said on CNN?s ?State of the Union.? ?We've got to write the legislation, but 2013, I hope, will be the year that we pass bipartisan immigration reform.?

"It will pass the [Republican-controlled] House because it secures our borders, it controls who gets a job ? [and] the 11 million [undocumented immigrations] will have a pathway to citizenship, but it will be earned, it will be long, and it will be hard," Sen. Graham said.

Senators Graham and Schumer are members of the bipartisan ?Gang of Eight? senators working to achieve immigration reform.

??I am very, very optimistic that we will have an agreement among the eight of us next week,? Schumer said on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.? ?[Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick] Leahy has agreed to have extensive markup and debate on the bill in April, and then we go to the floor in, God willing, in May. So I think we're on track. This is a major, major obstacle that's overcome.?

Another member of the Gang of Eight ? Sen. Marco Rubio (R) of Florida ? issued a more cautionary statement Sunday morning.

?I?m encouraged by reports of an agreement between business groups and unions on the issue of guest workers,? he said. ?However, reports that the bipartisan group of eight senators have agreed on a legislative proposal are premature.?

Rubio then laid out what he sees as the legislative road ahead:

?We have made substantial progress, and I believe we will be able to agree on a legislative proposal that modernizes our legal immigration system, improves border security and enforcement and allows those here illegally to earn the chance to one day apply for permanent residency contingent upon certain triggers being met. However, that legislation will only be a starting point.

Iraq says it will search more Syria-bound flights

BAGHDAD (AP) ? The Iraqi government says it will stop more aircraft traveling through Iraqi airspace and vehicles traveling overland en route to Syria to search for weapons on them.

Government spokesman Ali al-Moussawi said Friday that Iraq would conduct such searches on planes and vehicles believed to be carrying weapons to Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces ? or to rebels seeking to topple his regime.

The move comes after U.S Secretary of State John Kerry pressed Baghdad earlier this month to stop Iranian planes that Washington believes are flying through Iraqi airspace to ferry weapons and fighters to help the prop up the Syrian regime.

Iraq has promised in the past to prevent weapons transfers to Syria, but U.S. officials complain not enough is being done on the ground.

Google launching same-day delivery service for online shoppers ...

Internet search leader Google is taking another step beyond information retrieval into grocery delivery.

The new service, called Google Shopping Express, will initially provide same-day delivery of food and other products bought online by a small group of consumers in San Francisco and suburbs located south of the city. The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., didn't say how many people will be part of the test.

If the pilot program goes well, Google plans to expand delivery service to other markets.

"We hope this will help users explore the benefits of a local, same-day delivery service, and help us kick the tires on the new service," Google said in a Thursday statement.

The delivery service is part of Google's effort to increase consumer reliance on the Internet, so it will have more opportunities to show online ads, which generate most of its revenue.

Google has learned that the more time people spend online, the more likely they are to use its dominant search engine or one of its other popular services, like its YouTube video site or Gmail, that include advertising.

The delivery service also could spur merchants to buy more online ads if Google's same-day delivery service encourages consumers to do more of their shopping online. Having to wait days or, in some cases, more than a week for the delivery of online orders ranks among the biggest drawbacks to Internet shopping.

It's a problem that Amazon.com and eBay, which operate the largest e-commerce sites, already have been trying to solve by offering same-day service in some U.S. markets. Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, also offers same-day delivery in five markets.

A mix of national, regional and neighborhood merchants are enlisting in Google Shopping Express. The best-known names on the list include Target and Walgreen. All the merchants in the Google program will sell certain items through a central website. Google has hired courier services to pick up the orders at the merchant stores and then deliver them to the customer's home or office.

Although the couriers will be working on a contract basis, they will be driving Google-branded vehicles and wearing company-issued uniforms.

It remains unclear whether Internet shopping and same-day delivery can be profitable. Online grocer Webvan collapsed in 2001, largely because it couldn't devise a pricing plan that would pay for the costs of same-day delivery without alienating shoppers unwilling to pay too much extra for the added convenience.

Google is still trying to figure out how much to charge for its same-day delivery service. For the six-month test period in the San Francisco area, consumers won't have to pay a surcharge. Google instead will receive a commission from participating merchants.

The expansion into same-day delivery comes at the same time that Google is preparing to close some of its older online services so it can devote more attention and money to other projects.

The realignment has irked some Google users. The biggest complaints have centered on Google Reader, which allows people to automatically receive headlines and links from their favorite sites, and iGoogle, which allows Web surfers to design a page consisting of the Google search engine surrounded set up other online features, such as local weather reports and stock market quotes.

Google Reader is scheduled to close in July and iGoogle will shut down in November.

Troy PolamaluAP

Sometimes, wishes are quickly granted.? Sometimes, they already were.

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu wants player input in rule changes.? But the players already have input.

?I do wish . . . that the NFL did have a voice from the players? side, whether it?s our players? union president, or team captains, or our executive committee on the players? side,? Polamalu said earlier today on ESPN.? ?Because we?re the guys that realize the risk, we?re the guys on the field.?

As MDS pointed out, the players have a voice in the rule-revising process.? Specifically, this year?s the rule changes were discussed with NFLPA president Domonique Foxworth, who worked with Lester Archambeaux, Charlie Batch, Ernie Conwell, Matt Hasselbeck, Brandon Moore, Jeff Saturday, Ben Watson, and Eric Winston in providing input to the Competition Committee.

Also, Will Montgomery of the Redskins presented video to the Competition Committee in connection with the rule that makes the snapper a defenseless player.

Former players also had a voice with the Player Safety Advisory panel, which includes John Madden, Ronnie Lott, Ernie Accorsi, Antonio Freeman, Patrick Kerney, Willie Lanier, Oliver Luck, Steve Mariucci, Anthony Munoz.

So, basically, Polamalu already got what he wanted, without finding a lamp or losing an eyelash.

Four family members die trapped in burning home | Ontario | News ...

SHARON ?-?

A family?s love and devotion for each other may be why they died together in an early morning house fire in this village north of Newmarket.

Some who know the Dunsmuirs wonder if Kevin and his two teen sons stayed huddled in the master bedroom, waiting to be rescued, because they refused to leave without his wife, Jennifer, who was disabled by an aneurism in 2010.

?Kevin and Jennifer were sweethearts and their sons were just ... just ... they were honestly just the nicest family ever,? Ashley Bailey, 16, said Friday, wiping tears from her cheeks. ?I can?t even begin to explain how many people are devastated over this.?

Bailey was among many neighbours and friends waiting anxiously on Howard Ave., near Leslie St. and Mt. Albert Rd., to find out if anyone survived.

They knew at least one member of the family of five was dead, but everyone was in disbelief when York Regional Police revealed four had perished.

Const. Blair McQuillan said a 911 call was placed from inside the home around 5:30 a.m. and police arrived at the scene soon after.

?The home was on fire and the four occupants in a room at the front of the house were unable to get out,? McQuillan said, adding officers were unable to battle through the heat and smoke to get upstairs and save the family.

Firefighters couldn?t reach them in time, either.

Bailey played hockey with the youngest son, Cameron, 16, and became close to his mom through her visits to the home.

?I called Jennifer ?mom,??she said, adding Jennifer recently had suffered a stroke.

?It was a miracle that she was alive from it, so this happening...? Bailey said, trailing off as she became overwhelmed with grief.

Tina Ziel said Jennifer was still recovering from the aneurism she suffered a few years ago.

?She couldn?t speak very well and she lost a lot of her thought process,? the family friend said. ?I understand she was getting around with a cane.?

Late in the afternoon, police confirmed it was Cameron and his older brother, Robert, 19, who died with their parents.

The eldest son, David, 24, was away studying at Brock University in St. Catharines.

It?s thought the family?s golden retriever, Rolph, was also killed.

East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson, who knew the family, said the tragedy will be tough on the tight-knit community.

?It?s a very sad day,? she said. ?Our prayers and thoughts go out to our community, to our fire fighters and to all the family that have had this loss today.?

The Ontario Fire Marshal?s office is probing the fire and spokesman Scott Evenden said it?s too soon to know what started the blaze or why the family was unable to exit the two-storey brick home.

Group Says 'Tsunami' of New EPA Rules Could Raise Gas Prices

The American Petroleum Institute stated on Friday that "there is a tsunami of federal regulations coming out of the EPA that could put upward pressure on gasoline prices." According to the institute's Downstream Group Director Bob Greco, the new Tier 3 fuel regulations could raise refiners' costs while providing little to no environmental benefit. Here are the details.

* The EPA released its proposal on Friday that would involve new standards on tailpipe emissions, evaporative emissions, fuel, and emissions test fuel. The EPA estimates that the new standards will have an average cost of about $130 per vehicle in 2025.

* The American Petroleum Institute stated that analysis by energy consulting firm Baker & O'Brien indicates that the Tier 3 proposal would increase the cost of gasoline production by up to nine cents per gallon. A vapor reduction requirement would push the cost increase up to 25 cents a gallon and gasoline costs would also rise 30 percent by 2015.

* Further, Greco stated, the new requirements would actually increase greenhouse gas emissions because of the energy-intensive equipment needed to comply.

* Charles T. Drevna, president of the trade association American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, echoed the institute's concerns, stating that the new standards are "completely without merit given that the Agency has not previously offered any cost/benefit analysis to justify this onerous rulemaking."

* According to the association, another $10 billion in new infrastructure and $2.4 billion in operating costs will be the result of the Tier 3 regulations.

* However, the Association of Global Automakers praised the proposed standards, stating that the rulemaking will harmonize federal and California programs for both vehicles and fuels.

* The emissions standards included in the rule mirrors California's standards, the automakers association reported.

* According to the EPA, the standards will reduce pollution and help to avoid up to 2,400 premature deaths a year and 23,000 cases of respiratory ailments in children by 2030, in addition to 3,200 hospital admissions and asthma-related emergency room visits, and 1.8 million lost school days, work days and days when activities would be restricted due to air pollution .

* The EPA estimated that, by 2030, the total health-related benefits will be between $8 and $23 billion annually.

* "Today's proposed standards -- which will save thousands of lives and protect the most vulnerable -- are the next step in our work to protect public health and will provide the automotive industry with the certainty they need to offer the same car models in all 50 states," said EPA acting administrator Bob Perciasepe.

Two killed in attack on Libyan military camp

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Two Libyan military officers were killed and three soldiers injured when unknown assailants forced their way into a military camp in the desert south, an army spokesman said on Saturday.

The early morning attack happened at the Tamahind base, which was previously a storage place for army equipment under ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi and is near the desert town of Sabha, some 800 km (500 miles) south of the capital Tripoli.

Sabha residents contacted by phone said the attackers came in eight cars before fleeing.

"They came in by cars, shooting. Two officers were killed and three others were injured," Ali al-Sheikhli, spokesman for the army chief of staff, said. "An investigation is under way."

General Ramadan al-Barasi, military governor for the south, was not in the camp during the attack but his assistant Musa al-Awami was among the casualties, Sheikhli said.

In the chaos since Gaddafi's fall in 2011, the North African country's vast desert south has become a smuggling route for weapons which have reached al Qaeda militants deeper in the Sahara. The lawless region is also a conduit for trafficking legal and contraband goods.

Libya's national congress declared the south a military zone in December and ordered the temporary closure of borders with Algeria, Niger, Chad and Sudan.

The decree gave the defense ministry powers to appoint a military governor with authority to arrest fugitives from justice and deport illegal immigrants.

Aging vehicles leave Toyota North America chief optimistic on new sales

(Adds closing stock price)

By Ben Klayman

NEW YORK, March 28 - Toyota Motor Corp's top North American executive voiced optimism on Thursday about the U.S. economy and said demand in the industry this year would be driven by the need for consumers to replace aging cars and trucks.

Jim Lentz, newly appointed chief executive of North America, said the Japanese automaker sees U.S. industry new-car sales hitting 15.3 million this year, up from 14.5 million in 2012. Just six months ago, its 2013 forecast was for 14.7 million, but the company at the time believed talk of the fiscal cliff's impact would dampen the economy.

"We're cautiously optimistic about a growing economy, but there's still a lot of uncertainty that can derail the consumer's attitude," Lentz said in an interview after the New York Auto Show.

Offsetting his concerns were the improving mood of consumers, which is being reflected in a stronger housing market and rising stock market, and the need for people to replace cars and trucks, the average age of which has reached an all-time high in the United States of more than 11 years.

"When people can look at their 401ks and see that not only have they not fallen, but they are now starting to gain ... that is a real positive to overall consumer confidence," Lentz said.

Toyota should sell about 2.2 million cars and trucks under its three brands - Toyota, Lexus and Scion - this year, up from 2.08 million in 2012. The company is introducing nine new or updated vehicles this year.

Automakers are scheduled to report March U.S. sales on Tuesday and Lentz said Toyota expects the industry's annual sales rate to finish at about 15.4 million vehicles. That would mark the fifth straight month above the 15 million rate.

However, Toyota has no plans to revisit its full-year estimate at this point as Lentz said the company is forecasting the sales rate to slow to a range of 15.1 million to 15.2 million in the second quarter.

Lentz said a tightening of interest rates by the U.S. Federal Reserve would have a minimal impact this year and in 2014 on consumers, many of whom have monthly car payments.

"Whether you lease or whether you borrow money to buy a car, it's still all about the monthly payment," he said. "Right now, if you look at car payments relative to income, cars have probably never been cheaper even though the price of cars continues to go up. That monthly payment is still very fixed."

However, Lentz agreed that the high residual values that automakers are setting on their leased vehicles is not sustainable. He said Toyota is already adjusting its residual values going forward.

Open source video editor seeks help on Kickstarter, offers immortality in return

Forget having kids. Forget mind-transfers. Real immortality lies in naming a video transition after yourself. No, seriously. To make eternity happen, you simply need to donate $500 to Jonathan Thomas's Kickstarter project and in return he'll let you create and name a transition effect in a new cross-platform version of his free, open source video editing program, called OpenShot. Currently Linux-only, it supports regular timeline-based video editing with layers and compositing, transitions, effects, titles and support for a wide range of AV formats courtesy of the usual open source codec libraries. If it reaches its $20k goal, Thomas will start work Windows and Mac OS editions alongside Linux, anticipating a beta release before the end of the year. Smaller donations will receive more minor possessions in the afterlife, such as your name in the credits. Bigger pledges -- of up to $10,000 -- will flip things around slightly and require Jonathan Thomas to sell you his soul. Go get it, Pharoah!

Anxiety ahead of Supreme Court judgment in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Kenya is on edge awaiting the Supreme Court decision Saturday on whether it will uphold or invalidate the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as president, a potential flashpoint for unrest.

Kenyatta won by a hair in the March 4 election, with 50.07 percent of the vote, breaking the 50 percent mark by about 8,000 votes out of 12.3 million cast. His top rival, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, said Kenyatta won fraudulently and filed a petition with the court two weeks ago.

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said that the six justices, including him, have a daunting task in making the decision.

Closing arguments presented Friday focused on a report released by the court that found discrepancies in partial recounts from five of 22 polling stations. The report said discrepancies for the presidential elections were also found in 75 other stations.

Lawyer George Oraro, representing Odinga, urged the court to cancel results from those areas that showed problems.

Kethi D. Kilonzo, representing the civil society group Africa Center for Open Governance, said the audit proved their petition against Kenyatta's election.

The electoral commission's lawyer, Nani Mungai, said there was no mischief behind what he called "clerical errors." And Fred Ngatia, who is representing Kenyatta, said the vote tallying was carried out with a tremendous amount of accuracy.

Disputes over a flawed 2007 election sparked months of ethnic violence that killed more than 1,000 people in Kenya.

Despite vicious online fights between supporters of Kenyatta and Odinga on Facebook and Twitter, the East African country has, for the most part, remained at peace during this latest election period.

However, the Supreme Court decision may change that, depending largely on whether Odinga accepts the court's decision, if it rules against him.

"People are eagerly awaiting the decision in their own calmness," said Bob Mkangi, a legal consultant. "There are people who are talking about it wherever you go in the bar in the streets in the supermarkets. Everyone in the country is captivated by this moment. It is a historic moment for Kenya. It is the first petition initiated under the new constitution."

Kenya adopted a new constitution in 2010 as part of reforms to prevent a recurrence of the postelection violence in 2007. The constitution formed the Supreme Court and scheduled reforms for the rest of the judiciary which was seen as corrupt and lacking independence.

In 2007, Odinga refused to go to the courts for arbitration and took his protests to the streets over the flawed election in which President Mwai Kibaki was declared winner. The street protests degenerated into tribe on tribe violence, where communities settled old scores over land and resources.

The Supreme Court's formation and the newfound trust Kenyans have in the judiciary is frequently cited as one of the reasons Kenya's contentious election this year has not yet sparked any violence.

Millions turned out for election day on March 4, forming long winding lines that took hours to move.

Many had expected a low registration of voters because of apathy following the 2007-08 violence, but hyped up campaigns by Kenyatta, Odinga and other presidential candidates led to the highest registration in the country ever. Kenya's electoral commission registered 14.3 million people.

Election day, though, did not go as planned. An electronic voter ID system intended to prevent fraud failed for reasons yet to be explained by the electoral commission. Vote officials instead used manual voter rolls.

After the polls closed, results were to be sent electronically to Nairobi, where officials would quickly tabulate a preliminary vote count in order to maximize transparency after rigging accusations following the 2007 vote. But that system failed, too. Election officials have indicated that computer servers overloaded but have yet to fully explain the problem.

As the early count system was still being used, election results showed more than 330,000 rejected ballots, an unusually high number. But after the count resumed with the arrival in Nairobi of manual tallies, the number of rejected ballots was greatly reduced, and the election commission said the computer was mistakenly multiplying the number of rejected ballots by a factor of eight.

Odinga's lawyers told the Supreme Court this week that the switch from electronic voter identification to manual voter roll was stage managed to allow inflation of Kenyatta's votes to take him past the 50 percent threshold. That accusation has been vehemently denied by the electoral commission and Kenyatta's legal team.

If the court upholds Kenyatta's win, he will become the second sitting president in Africa to face charges at the International Criminal Court. He and Deputy President-elect William Ruto both face charges related to having helped orchestrate the 2007-08 postelection violence. Both deny the charges. Ruto's trial begins in late May; Kenyatta's begins in July. Kenyatta has promised to report to The Hague.

Because of a vacancy, Kenya's Supreme Court currently has six justices on it, which leaves open the possibility of a split decision

In the case where there is a tie then the declaration by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission that Kenyatta won will stand, legal consultant Mkangi said. The next stage will be planning for the swearing in ceremony.

"Save for any outright violation of the constitution and the law we are obligated to accept the decision that it (Supreme Court) makes," he said. "Never will we have decisions that please everyone. We might not necessarily agree with the decision but must accept the decision."

How Copywriting Creates Six-Figure Incomes | Ray Edwards

If you think ?copywriting? (writing words that persuade people to do or buy something) is only about creating ads, you?re missing the point. Copywriting is a skill has created more six-figure incomes than you might imagine. In some cases, seven-figure incomes.

Type writer

For instance, one of my best friends generates a healthy $150,000 per month from his home-based business, and at its core, that business is fueled by my friend?s copywriting skill.

If you truly want to start your own business, or create a second income stream, one of the first things I would recommend you learn is the basic skill of powerful copywriting.

Now, this is not some ?get rich quick? scheme?

This is a serious business skill than can provide you with a comfortable six-figure annual income for the rest of your life.

You can run your business from anywhere. You can dream up promotions and campaigns, write the copy, and put the plan into profit? all in the same day.

And yes, you could ?retire? from your present job, and use your copywriting skills to build your own marketing empire?- working wherever and whenever you want.

I have run my business from all over the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the UK:

  • Working form home in the Northwest US (sometimes at my house, sometimes from my office 5 minutes away, and sometimes from Starbucks!)?
  • On the road in my motorhome (summer-before-last we put 8,000 miles on the coach, the last winter we spent in California)?
  • Traveling to Chicago, San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle, Toronto and New York?
  • On vacation with family in Michigan, the Carolinas, Utah, and Montana?
  • And from England and Scotland?

My results are not typical?- you?ll have your own results. Want to join me in the ?not typical? club? Want to know how I managed to get these unusual results?

It comes down to one skill: copywriting. Now, ask yourself? if you learned how to master the art of ?persuasion in print?, how could that change your life?

  • Will you finally get your online business started?
  • Will you write copy freelance, and live a life free from offices, meetings, and memos?
  • Will you take your existing online business and multiply your profits using the power of copy?

Or will you keep struggling along like most ?Internet Marketers?? That road leads nowhere. You don?t need to learn the new ?shiny object of the week? system. You don?t need the latest greatest website.? You just need a skill that is valued, and that has the power to give you leverage. The skill I recommend starting with is the ability to write persuasive copy.

If you have decided that I am right about this, give life to that decision and do something about it. Pick up a book, take a copywriting course, or just sit down and write a piece of copy. Today. Maybe even right now.

A good place to start would be with my book on copywriting. An even better place to start would be with the live webinar training about copywriting I?m doing next Tuesday.

Question: How can you profitably apply the power of persuasive copy in your business?

Ex-Sen. Craig loses bid to dismiss FEC lawsuit

(AP) ? A federal judge refused on Thursday to dismiss a Federal Election Commission lawsuit that accuses former Sen. Larry Craig of misusing $217,000 in campaign funds for his legal defense after his arrest in a 2007 airport bathroom sex sting.

Craig had argued that the airport bathroom trip fell under his official duties as senator because he was traveling between Idaho and Washington for work, and therefore the legal fees could be paid for with campaign money.

But U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson rejected that argument. She wrote in her ruling that the charge against Craig didn't relate "to his conduct as a legislator, but only actions undertaken in the privacy and anonymity of a restroom stall." Jackson set a scheduling conference in the case for April 26.

The Idaho Republican was arrested by an undercover police officer at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The officer said Craig tapped his feet and signaled under a stall divider that he wanted sex. Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and paid a fine. After his arrest later became public, Craig tried unsuccessfully to reverse his conviction.

The FEC allows campaign funds to be used for legal expenses that were caused by a candidate's campaign or officeholder's duties, and determines that on a case-by-case basis. The commission sued Craig last year after concluding his legal problems had nothing to do with campaigning for federal office. The FEC is seeking an order requiring Craig to return the money to his campaign, along with fines of up to $6,500 against Craig and his campaign treasurer, Kaye O'Riordan.

"Senator Craig was arrested for, and pled guilty to, committing a criminal violation of Minnesota state law," Jackson wrote. "One does not need to be a United States congressman - or any sort of federal official - to be charged with this offense, and the arrest did not call into question his conduct as a legislator. Neither the charge nor the underlying conduct had anything to do with his performance of his official duties, so the legal expenses they generated were not incurred in connection with those duties."

In an email, Craig's lawyer, Andrew Herman, said, "We will assess the opinion and decide how to proceed after doing so."

NOvA neutrino detector records first 3-D particle tracks

What will soon be the most powerful neutrino detector in the United States has recorded its first three-dimensional images of particles.

Using the first completed section of the NOvA neutrino detector, scientists have begun collecting data from cosmic raysparticles produced by a constant rain of atomic nuclei falling on the Earth's atmosphere from space.

"It's taken years of hard work and close collaboration among universities, national laboratories and private companies to get to this point," said Pier Oddone, director of the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Fermilab manages the project to construct the detector.

The active section of the detector, under construction in Ash River, Minn., is about 12 feet long, 15 feet wide and 20 feet tall. The full detector will measure more than 200 feet long, 50 feet wide and 50 feet tall.

Scientists' goal for the completed detector is to use it to discover properties of mysterious fundamental particles called neutrinos. Neutrinos are as abundant as cosmic rays in the atmosphere, but they have barely any mass and interact much more rarely with other matter. Many of the neutrinos around today are thought to have originated in the big bang.

"The more we know about neutrinos, the more we know about the early universe and about how our world works at its most basic level," said NOvA co-spokesperson Gary Feldman of Harvard University.

Later this year, Fermilab, outside of Chicago, will start sending a beam of neutrinos 500 miles through the earth to the NOvA detector near the Canadian border. When a neutrino interacts in the NOvA detector, the particles it produces leave trails of light in their wake. The detector records these streams of light, enabling physicists to identify the original neutrino and measure the amount of energy it had.

When cosmic rays pass through the NOvA detector, they leave straight tracks and deposit well-known amounts of energy. They are great for calibration, said Mat Muether, a Fermilab post-doctoral researcher who has been working on the detector.

"Everybody loves cosmic rays for this reason," Muether said. "They are simple and abundant and a perfect tool for tuning up a new detector."

The detector at its current size catches more than 1,000 cosmic rays per second. Naturally occurring neutrinos from cosmic rays, supernovae and the sun stream through the detector at the same time. But the flood of more visible cosmic-ray data makes it difficult to pick them out.

Once the upgraded Fermilab neutrino beam starts, the NOvA detector will take data every 1.3 seconds to synchronize with the Fermilab accelerator. Inside this short time window, the burst of neutrinos from Fermilab will be much easier to spot.

The NOvA detector will be operated by the University of Minnesota under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.

The NOvA experiment is a collaboration of 180 scientists, technicians and students from 20 universities and laboratories in the U.S and another 14 institutions around the world. The scientists are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation and funding agencies in the Czech Republic, Greece, India, Russia and the United Kingdom.
