Apple is approaching yet another App Store milestone -- this time 50 billion downloads. To celebrate, they're once again offering a big chunk of iTunes bucks, and a few bonus prizes as well. Apple says:
As of today, nearly 50 billion apps have been downloaded worldwide. And we couldn?t have done it without you. So we want to say thanks. Download the 50 billionth app, and you could win a US$10,000 App Store Gift Card. Or download one of the first 50 apps after that, and you could win a US$500 App Store Gift Card.* Browse the App Store and download your next favorite app.
It's great that Apple has fun with these milestones, and gets some welcome good press from them. It's be really great to see them really blow the doors off sometime. They're one of the world's richest companies. Imagine $50K for the winner? And 1K for each of the next 50 downloads? Imagine more. That would be outrageous in the best sense of the word, and certainly more fun than returning money to shareholders...
Creeping decimalism aside, there's still 800,000,000 or so downloads to go at the time of this writing, so if you want more iTunes money than you could likely ever spend, get your prediction algorithms going and keep your finger on the download button.
Traktor DJ for iPad showed us what can be done when you resist the urge to simply shrink your existing software or just slide it under a touch interface. Since its iOS debut, the folk at Native Instruments have spent the last couple of months cautiously considering how best to transplant the same waveform-based interface over to the iPhone. Today, you can find out. You get everything you find in the iPad version, like three band EQ, filters, hot cues and effects --along with the same key, tempo and timbre matching utilities, plus library sharing with the full-fat desktop version. The UI isn't the only thing getting downsized, either: this iPhone-friendly version costs just $4.99 (compared to $20 on the iPad). That should leave enough change to drop a few on party rock anthems.
The notion of a physical store dedicated to 3D printing is still newto us, and Solidoodle's Asia-focused plans didn't give much reassurance that we'd see more shops in English-speaking countries all that soon. iMakr may have just come to our rescue by opening what it claims is the world's largest 3D printing store in London's Farringdon area, occupying 2,500 square feet across two floors. The showroom has both workshops as well as printers to buy on the spot, including the Solidoodle 3; we've reached out to get the full selection, although iMakr's online channel already sells MakerBot's Replicator 2 and a few less immediately recognizable brands. We're still far from having a 3D printing store on every corner, but the London store gives the retail concept some legitimacy.
Redfin is launching a new feature today that allows prospective home buyers and sellers to better estimate a home’s value. Anybody who has ever searched for a house or tried to sell one is probably aware of Zillow’s Zestimates – even though they are mostly automated and can’t quite take aspects like locations, view, noise, neighborhood and other details of a house into account. With its new “Home Value Tool,” Redfin aims to bring the human element back into the equation by allowing users to select a number of homes that they believe best compare with the home they are trying to get an estimate for. Redfin is mostly aiming this tool at home owners who are trying to sell their houses, but there is no reason why home buyers couldn’t also use it to get an estimate for the house they are trying to buy. As Redfin told me, the reason the company is mostly focusing its marketing efforts on sellers right now is due to the fact that, with the real estate market picking up again, so many people are thinking about selling their homes for the first time in years. Obviously, though, the Home Value Tool will also be very useful for buyers. Redfin notes that giving users more input into the evaluation process allows them to “select the homes that best compare to their own, which is important because a home?s actual value is often affected by factors that are difficult for computers to capture, such as a certain view, traffic noise, or unique architectural features.” Users simply enter the address of the home and confirm a number of details about the house (bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.). After that, Redfin will automatically show two comparable homes, but – most importantly – users will be able to select five comparable homes that have recently sold nearby. Redfin previously offered home estimates, too. The company, however, believes that this new tool is easier to use, and while the previous version asked users to remove homes from an original list of 10 homes, the new tool allows users to build up a list of comparables. The new tool also homes in on a single price estimate instead of giving the home owner just a range. The company stresses that this is obviously not an official appraisal, but rather meant to give its customers a starting point to understand their home’s

ZURICH/LONDON (Reuters) - UBS won broad shareholder backing for its strategy and pay policies on Thursday, dealing a blow to a surprise call from activist investor Knight Vinke Asset Management for the Swiss bank to hive off its investment bank.
Knight Vinke's intervention, in an open letter to UBS management, staff and investors, was not taken up by other shareholders during hours of questioning at the bank's annual general meeting (AGM) on the outskirts of Zurich.
UBS said forecast-beating first-quarter earnings earlier this week showed its pared-back investment bank complemented its prized wealth management arm, and contradicted Knight Vinke's view that the two could hold each other back.
"I would not buy the argument that one side is preventing the other side from reaching full potential," one of UBS's largest ten shareholders told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
"For sure, there was a phase where that was the case because of the way the investment bank was run but to me, UBS is learning from past mistakes and is moving forward."
UBS is battling to recover from a taxpayer bailout at the height of the 2007-9 financial crisis and focus on its business with wealthy clients after a series of scandals at its investment bank, including a record $1.5 billion fine for its part in rigging benchmark interest rates and $2.3 billion of losses from a rogue-trading scandal.
New York-based Knight Vinke, which owns just under one percent in UBS, has a track record of agitating for change at companies from banking group HSBC to retailer Carrefour , although its results have been mixed.
Some 89 percent of investors backed UBS's 2012 performance at the AGM, a much stronger endorsement than last year, when anger over the rogue trading scandal meant UBS's board only narrowly avoided defeat with a 52 percent vote in favor.
More than 82 percent of shareholders also backed UBS's pay plans despite anger among retail shareholders at a $26 million signing-on fee for the head of the investment bank. Last year, over a third of investors rejected the remuneration report.
SIGNS OF SUCCESS?
UBS's decision to shrink its investment bank bore fruit in the first quarter when a more equities-focused division swung to a pretax profit of 977 million francs. Its private bank, the world's second-largest after Bank of America , also attracted the most customer money for six years in the quarter.
Crosstown rival Credit Suisse illustrated the benefits of maintaining both an investment banking division and a wealth management arm last week when stable revenues at the former helped compensate for a slide in private banking profits in the first quarter.
A previous campaign to radically restructure UBS by a former president, Luqman Arnold, fell apart when Lehman Brothers collapsed in September 2008. Arnold's investment fund's stake in UBS was held by Lehman Brothers meaning he could not access the shares when the U.S. investment bank went bust.
Shares in UBS were down around half a percent to 16.53 Swiss francs in Zurich on Thursday, after hitting a near two-year high of 16.90 francs on Tuesday following its first-quarter results. The European banking index <.sx7p> was flat.
RISKS
Knight Vinke has made a name for itself by targeting corporate titans but its report card is mixed.
Despite a slew of strongly-worded letters and public outbursts, it failed to block the $31 billion takeover of miner Xstrata by commodities trader Glencore late last year.
A two year public campaign against HSBC's diversification strategy failed to stop the bank raising fresh capital to meet its U.S. debts. HSBC closed its U.S. consumer finance business and focused more on Asia around the time of the campaign, stating that such changes were already in train.
In a letter in Thursday's Financial Times newspaper, Knight Vinke's chief executive Eric Knight said UBS's investment banking activities posed risks for its wealth management arm.
"It is argued that the investment bank brings cross-selling opportunities to the wealth management business - and to a limited extent this may be true. However, whatever benefits there may be need to be viewed in the wider context of the risks that the investment bank brings to the group as a whole."
Knight Vinke said the best owners of UBS's investment bank were probably its management and employees.
"This is a discussion that is best had when all the businesses are doing well - as is the case today - and the board needs to be encouraged to act quickly and decisively so as not to lose the opportunity," it said.
(For the full text of the letter click on: )
Knight would need the support of other investors to force change at UBS but another shareholder thought that unlikely.
"Most people would stop short of demanding a full blown break up. The restructuring that kicked off in November last year tackling the most troublesome areas has been producing good results, and the latest results from the investment bank were encouraging," said the top 30 investor.

Report looks at the history and impact of synthetic playing surfaces and shoe design on athlete health
ROSEMONT, Ill.Injury on the playing field often is caused by the interaction between the athlete's shoe and the field surface. In a literature review appearing in the May 2013 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS), researchers shed light on the evolution of synthetic playing surfaces. The study summarizes the existing research on artificial turf and the role of shoe-surface interface in injury.
Synthetic surfaces were introduced in the 1960s to improve play surface durability and accessibility, and to minimize field maintenance. Newer, "third generation" artificial surfaces behave more like grass and soil, but continue to be associated with injuries to the foot, ankle, toe and knee, in addition to concussions. Characteristics of the play surface directly affect how much energy is absorbed by the athlete upon impact.
The key to minimizing injuries on natural and artificial playing fields may be to understand the interplay between different types of athletic shoes, specific sports and field surfaces.
"Optimal shoe-playing surface conditions may be level and sport-specific," said orthopaedic surgeon and lead study author Mark C. Drakos, MD. "The shoe-playing surface interface is a modifiable risk factor for injury, and further research is needed to improve playing conditions for athletes of all levels."
Determining the shoe-playing surface interface is complex and challenging as it is influenced by human factors (i.e., the athlete's body weight, velocity and acceleration, deceleration, loading rate, and angle of the foot and height before contact), shoe factors (i.e., sole type and cleat/stud material of footwear, and number and size of cleats and cleat configuration), type of playing surface, and related environmental factors.
Other article highlights:
Most types of shoes have higher peak torque (foot movement and movement force) on artificial turf than on natural turf.
Sole material and cleat pattern and shape may affect torque. For example, shoes with small cleats place the lowest amount of pressure on the foot, and may potentially minimize the incidence of foot stress fractures on artificial surfaces.
Because of constant changes in both the athletic shoe market and artificial surfaces, much of the existing research on the shoe-playing surface is outdated.
"The role of the shoe surface interface in the development of lower extremity injuries continues to be clarified," said Dr. Drakos. Optimal shoe-playing surfaces are most likely level- and sport-specific. The shoe-playing surface interface is a modifiable risk factor for injury and further research is needed to improve playing conditions for all athletes.
